Undergraduate Application Process

The admission procedure to undergraduate programs in the School of Music is a two-step process.

1. Submit an application to Penn State. You may contact the Office of Undergraduate Admissions for an application or you may apply using the Interactive Web application at: www.admissions.psu.edu. Applications are also available in guidance offices of Pennsylvania high schools.

You are strongly urged to submit your application prior to November 30.

Note: there is no separate music application.

2. Schedule an audition with the School of Music by completing the online form.
Do not wait to hear from Admissions before scheduling; the deadline for scheduling is February 1.

Other audition arrangements may be made with the School of Music. In certain cases, permission may be granted to send a recorded audition.  Click here for information.

Due to enrollment limitations, applicants are encouraged to audition by February 24.

Audition requirements vary according to performance area. In addition to the performance audition, candidates are assessed regarding their level of musicianship and are informally interviewed by the faculty. Some auditions are conducted in front of a panel of faculty members, while others may be done in a private lesson setting with an individual faculty member. Parents may request to observe auditions done in a private lesson setting, although frequently applicants prefer to work with a faculty specialist without an audience present.  Please let us know if you have questions or concerns about the process.

Offers of admission are made only after submission and approval of a University application and the performance of a successful audition, usually by March 15.

TRANSFER STUDENTS

Transfer applicants for all undergraduate degree programs in the School of Music must audition as part of their application. Fall admission applicants are encouraged to audition on the dates above. These auditions can be scheduled using the link shown above. For spring admission, applicants should arrange individual auditions. All applicants are strongly encouraged to submit a University application before auditioning. Students pursuing advanced standing in the music curriculum should be successfully progressing through a music degree at an accredited institution. Those enrolled in a degree program other than music should expect to begin their music studies at the freshman level.
