International Programs - Music Education

Music Courses

Because Music Education majors have required courses every Fall and Spring semester, it is very difficult for them to study abroad in the fall or spring without delaying their graduation.  Fortunately, Penn State does have summer study abroad options available.

IES VIENNA MUSIC SUMMER PROGRAM

Minimum GPA: 3.0

IES Abroad offers a summer program in Vienna, Austria designed specially for music majors.  Participants choose two or three of three courses: performance studies, a music history course, and German language.

The “Music Performance Workshop” allows you to expand your repertoire and hone your performance skills as you immerse yourself in Vienna’s rich musical traditions.   In addition to group sessions and lectures, the “Music Performance Workshop” includes six hours of individual technical training (one hour per week).  Additional individual instruction can be arranged by enrolling in Individual Performance Studies for one additional credit.

Each summer the music history course focuses on a different aspect of Vienna’s rich musical tradition.  In 2016 the course is “Music of the Viennese Classical Period,”  in 2017 it will be “Music in the Bedermeier Era,” and in 2018 it will be “Music of the Late 19th Century and Fin-de-Siècle.”

Summer study abroad programs with a performance component are extremely rare. This program allows music and music education majors to study abroad, take a performance workshop and a music history course without being away from University Park for a Fall or Spring semester.  This is especially valuable for Music Education majors.
