The admission procedure to undergraduate programs in the School of Music is a two-step process.
1. Submit an application to Penn State. You may contact the Office of Undergraduate Admissions for an application or you may apply online at www.admissions.psu.edu. Applications are also available in guidance offices of Pennsylvania high schools.
You are strongly urged to submit your application prior to November 30. Note: there is not a separate written application for the music major.

2. You must submit your application to Penn State before requesting an audition. Once submitted, please schedule your audition by completing the online scheduling form. Those intending the composition major should use the composition online scheduling form. Do not wait to hear from the Office of Undergraduate Admissions before scheduling.
The suggested deadline for scheduling is February 1. Due to enrollment limitations, applicants are encouraged to audition no later than February 24.
Please click on audition requirements by performance area to discover what will be asked of you. Some auditions are conducted in front of a panel of faculty members, while others occur in a private lesson setting with an individual faculty member. Parents may request to observe auditions in the private lesson setting, although applicants frequently prefer to work with a faculty specialist without an audience present. In addition to the performance audition, candidates are assessed regarding their level of musicianship and are informally interviewed by the faculty. Please let us know if you have questions or concerns about the process.
In certain cases, permission may be granted to send a recorded audition. Click here for information regarding submission of a recording.
Offers of admission are made only after submission and approval of a University application and the performance of a successful audition, usually by March 15.
Transfer applicants for all undergraduate degree programs must audition as part of their application. Applicants for fall admission are encouraged to follow the procedures above to schedule an audition. Applicants for spring admission should arrange individual auditions.
Students pursuing advanced standing in a music degree curriculum should be successfully progressing through a music degree at an accredited institution. Those enrolled in a degree program other than music should expect to begin their music studies at the freshman level.
