Invitational Orchestra Festival
Saturday, October 17, 2015
The Penn State Invitational Orchestra Festival is a one-day immersion in the art of musical performance for talented high school string players. This exciting event offers students the opportunity to rehearse and perform with members of the Penn State Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Maestro Gerardo Edelstein.
Repertoire to be performed includes Serenade for String Orchestra, Op. 20 by Edward Elgar, and Symphony No. 9 in E Minor ("From the New World"), by Antonín Dvořák. String parts for practice are available by request.
The festival will conclude with a concert performance in Esber Recital Hall at the Penn State School of Music on the University Park campus. Festival participants will perform in a side-by-side format with collegiate Philharmonic Orchestra members during the concert. This concert (6:30 p.m.) is free and open to the public.
Participants will also receive instruction in sectionals and masterclasses led by the Penn State faculty.
- James Lyon and Max Zorin, violin
- Tim Deighton, viola
- Kim Cook, cello
- Robert Nairn, double bass
- Robert Gardner, string education
- Gerardo Edelstein, conductor
Participation is open to any advanced high school string players (violin, viola, 'cello, or double bass; see repertoire for level). Students are to be recommended by their high school orchestra director or private teacher. It is helpful to only recommend students who are of the appropriate ability level and committed to attending the event. Students will be accepted until sections are full, based on date of recommendation. Registration materials will be sent via email after recommendations have been submitted.
