Music Technology professor Mark Ballora participated in Penn State Polar Day on April 19, 2014. He and New Media graduate student Matt Kenney presented sonifications of Antarctic ice measurements. Using sound, they created renderings of ice surface area, volume, basal temperature, sea levels and solar energy variations. The datasets covered the time from 400,000 years ago to present. Polar Day attendees were intrigued with how easily they were able to hear variations in ice age periods, even with no prior training. For the Penn State News article about Polar Day, click here.
