Mark Ballora gave a “lightning talk” at the Blue White Science Expo in April 2017. Sponsored by the Office of the Vice President for Research, seventeen researchers from a broad array of disciplines gave short talks explaining their exciting recent discoveries in a fun and informal format wherein each presenter speaks for a few minutes on their topic.
Ballora's talk was on sonifications of scientific data in a session themed Transforming Education. He focused on his work with Professor of Meteorology Jenni Evans and their recent project that rendered the tropical storm activity worldwide from the year 2005, tracing their paths on a global map and creating sounds that indicated their intensity, location, and symmetry.
