The Penn State Institute for the Arts and Humanities presents "The Beginnings of 'Leavings'" on October 11, 5:00 p.m. at the Penn State Downtown Theatre Center. The symposium is an introduction to the beginnings of an original work based on the life and times of Mozart's librettist, Lorenzo Da Ponte. Join composer and IAH Visiting Professor Roberto Andreoni, playwright and Penn State Laureate Susan Russell, and inaugural recipient of the Agnes Scollins Carey Early Career Professorship in the Arts Ted Christopher as they discuss this highly original work, slated to premier in the spring of 2017 at Penn State. The symposium will feature a round-table discussion of the work -- the process of fashioning a narrative structure, the music that accompanies and informs that narrative, the inspiration of Da Ponte, and the timeline for the production -- as well as musical excerpts and a reading of the dialogue for the first scene.
