Academic Standards

Mid-Program Review

All School of Music students undergo a mid-program entrance review during the fourth semester for the purpose of counseling and advising. The fourth-semester review includes the following:

  1. Assessment of progress in theory, sight-singing, ear training, music history, ensembles, applied music, piano proficiency requirement, concert and Common Hour attendance, and general education courses

  2. Recommendations from adviser, applied teacher, and theory or history faculty member in the School of Music

  3. An interview with the theory, history, or performance faculty members

Students who pass their review are admitted to their selected major (BA, BMA, BM, or BME).



All students in the University must maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 2.00 for all courses taken. In addition to this general rule, students in the School of Music must earn a grade of C or better in each course in the major field. Although a grade of C in required music and professional education courses carries credit, repeated grades of C should be considered an indication of mediocrity and may be cause for advising that student to withdraw from the program.



Scholarships are awarded to a select number of music majors for meritorious achievement. Students receiving awards should be aware of the following conditions:

  1. You must continue to major in music.
  2. You must continue to focus your applied study on the instrument or voice in which you auditioned for admission to the School.
  3. You must continue to make steady and satisfactory progress toward your degree in all subjects, including general education and music.
  4. You must earn grades of "B" or higher in your applied study each semester.
  5. You must consistently maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.5.
  6. You must perform each semester in at least one major ensemble.

The academic standing of scholarship students is reviewed each semester. The scholarship funding of those who fail to meet all of these conditions may be revoked at any time.


Music History Pardon Policy: A grade of D or F in Music 162 will be pardoned if the student receives a grade of B or better in Music 261 AND Music 262. (NOTE: This pardon is NOT in effect for students in the B.S. in Music Education program. If a student in the B.S. in Music Education program receives a D or F in Music 162, that student will be allowed to enroll in Music 261 but must re-take Music 162.) No pardon policy applies to Music 261 and Music 262. A student receiving a grade of D or F in Music 261 may enroll in Music 262, but will then have to repeat Music 261.

Music Theory Grade Policy: Students who receive a D or F in any written theory or aural skills course will not be permitted to continue to the next course in the theory sequence until they receive a C or higher in that course. For example, if a student receives a D or an F in Music 121 and a C in Music 131, he/she must wait until the following year to repeat Music 121 before enrolling in Music 122 and 132. Similarly, if a student receives a C in Music 121 and a D or an F in Music 131, he/she must wait until the following year to repeat Music 131 before enrolling in Music 122 and 132.


Academic Integrity

Academic integrity is the pursuit of scholarly activity free from fraud and deception and is an educational objective of this institution. Academic dishonesty includes, but is not limited to, cheating, plagiarizing, fabricating of information or citations, facilitating acts of academic dishonesty by others, having unauthorized possession of examinations, submitting work of another person or work previously used without informing the instructor, or tampering with the academic work of other students. At the beginning of each course, it is the responsibility of the instructor to provide a statement clarifying the application of academic integrity criteria to that course. A student charged with academic dishonesty will be given oral or written notice of the charge by the instructor. If students believe they have been falsely accused, they should seek redress through informal discussions with the instructor, department head, dean, or campus executive officer. If the instructor believes that the infraction is sufficiently serious to warrant referral of the case to Judicial Affairs, or if the instructor will award a final grade of F in the course because of the infraction, the student and instructor will be afforded formal due process.
