An undergraduate student and a graduate student in music education have been invited to present their research at the "Spirituality and Music Education (SAME)" conference, December 10-11, 2017, in London, U.K. Senior Olivia Dowd will present "The Culture of Care and Empathy in Music and Music Education," a paper based on her honors thesis. From Pittsburgh, PA, Olivia served as historian of the Penn State Blue Band as well as president of Penn State’s Collegiate National Association for Music Educators chapter. In addition, she served on the College of Arts and Architecture's Technology Committee. Olivia is a member of Anthony J. Costa's clarinet studio and a honors advisee of music education professor Linda Thornton.
Ph.D. student Mac Himes will present "Every man prays in his own language: The sacred music of Duke Ellington and Dave Brubeck." From Huntingdon, PA, Mac is an active jazz guitarist in the central PA area and is also a Penn State adjunct faculty member. Mac's paper was advised by Linda Thornton. His academic advisor is Ann Clements.
