Eric Hahn ('05 B.S., '10 M.M. band/wind ensemble conducting, '13 M.A. theory) has been named a quarterfinalist for the "2017 Music Educator of the Year" award presented by the Recording Academy and the GRAMMY Foundation. The award was established to recognize current educators (kindergarten through college, public and private schools) who have made a significant and lasting contribution to the field of music education and who demonstrate a commitment to the broader cause of maintaining music education in the schools. The recipient will be honored during GRAMMY Week 2017.
Hahn is director of bands at Bangor Area High School in Bangor, PA. His current ensembles include Symphonic Band, Concert Band, Jazz Band, Marching Band, Pep Band, and Pit Orchestra. Bangor Area School District has been named a Best Communities for Music Education (2014, 2016) and a GRAMMY Signature School Semifinalist (2014, 2016). He also serves the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association as District 10 President.
Prior to accepting the position at Bangor Area High School, Hahn taught at Bald Eagle Area High School in Wingate, PA. As director of bands, he conducted high school concert and jazz bands, middle school concert and jazz bands, marching band, and the pit orchestra. He also served as pianist for the middle school and high school choral programs.
As an undergraduate student, Hahn studied saxophone with Carrie Koffman and David Stambler. He was a recipient of the Atherton Memorial Music Award and the Ned C. and Janette M. Deihl Blue Band Scholarship. In addition, he was selected for membership in the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, Golden Key International Honor Society, and Pi Kappa Lambda National Music Honor Society. As a graduate student, he studied conducting with Dennis Glocke and served as a graduate teaching assistant for MUSIC 008 (Rudiments Of Music), MUSIC 266 (Basic Conducting), and MUSIC 395B (Cohort Practicum II). He was also an assistant with the Marching Blue Band. His primary advisor during his M.A. degree in music theory was Taylor Greer.
Eric Hahn currently resides in Whitehall, PA with his wife Kathryn and their son Brennan.
