About Clifford Leaman

Critics have hailed Clifford Leaman as “an artist of the first order…intuitive, exciting, and enthralling.”;  (Paul Wagner, The Saxophone Journal)  “Leaman reveals himself to be {an} artist of technical brilliance and emotional commitment.”; “The range of colors is impressive…”; (Jack Sullivan, American Record Guide)  Associate Dean, Director of Undergraduate Studies, and Professor of Saxophone at the University of South Carolina, Leaman is in great demand as a soloist and clinician and has performed and taught throughout the United States, Canada, Italy, Spain, France, Slovenia, Sweden, Thailand and in China, where he has been a featured guest artist nine times since 2004.

Leaman has recorded previously with pianist Derek Parsons on the Equilibrium label as the Ambassador Duo, and with percussionist Scott Herring as the RoseWind Duo. In addition to his work with piano and marimba, Leaman has performed as a concerto soloist with numerous Wind Ensembles and Orchestras and has recorded concerti by Henry Brant, Leslie Bassett, and Ingolf Dahl. He has given masterclasses at major schools of music and conservatories across the globe, including Northwestern, Eastman, Michigan, North Texas, Florida State, Conservatoire National Supérieur de Paris, Conservatoire de Boulogne-Billancourt, Conservatoire de Strasbourg, Conservatorio Superior de Música de Aragón, Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya, the Royal Academy of Music (Stockholm), Beijing Central Conservatory, Shanghai Conservatory, and the Sichuan Conservatory.

An avid supporter of contemporary music, Leaman has commissioned and given the world premiere performances of over 30 works, including concerti by William Bolcom, Leslie Bassett, Frank Ticheli, and Michael Colgrass.  Leaman is an artist-clinician for D’Addario and the Conn-Selmer Company, Inc. and performs exclusively on Selmer saxophones and D’Addario Reserve reeds.

Hailed as an “American virtuoso” (Audiophile Audition), “enormous power and intelligent, instinctive interpretation” (Spoleto Today), and “simply dazzling” (The State), pianist Joseph Rackers has performed for enthusiastic audiences in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Kiev, Rome, Shanghai and Washington D.C., at venues across Canada, China, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Bulgaria, Ukraine and extensively throughout the United States. His performances around the world include the Shanghai and Sichuan Conservatories of Music and Yantai International Music Festival, Kiev International Music Festival, Gina Bachauer International Piano Festival, Dame Myra Hess Concert Series, Banff Centre for the Arts, Moulin d’Andé Arts Festival, Varna International Piano Festival and Society of Composers International Conference, to name a few. Joseph Rackers is an International Steinway Artist and serves on the artist faculty of the Perugia International Music Festival in Italy, Burgos International Music Festival in Spain, Texas State International Piano Festival and Southeastern Piano Festival in the United States. He is a graduate of the Eastman School of Music where he earned the Doctor of Musical Arts and Master of Music degrees and was awarded the Performer’s Certificate. His principal teachers were Natalya Antonova and Raymond Herbert.

Rackers is Associate Professor of Piano and Coordinator of the Piano Area at the University of South Carolina School of Music where he teaches an international class of pianists and serves as Director of the Southeastern Piano Festival.
