Student Awards



A School of Music Honors Recital is presented each semester. Participants are those students who have performed an outstanding jury at the end of the preceding semester. Faculty in each of the performance areas (brass, keyboard, percussion, strings, woodwinds, voice) nominate students from each area to perform. Each area will have ten minutes performance time for one but no more than two students. A student may be selected for performance no more than two times during his/her undergraduate career. The recitals are held in the Esber Recital Hall and are open to the public.



The School of Music offers a Performer's Recognition Award for exceptional undergraduate performers. The procedure for earning the award is outlined below.

  1. Students in the B.A. and B.M.E. programs who want to work toward recognition of performance achievement must be enrolled in either the primary or performance applied music tracks.

  2. Students who wish to pursue the recognition of performance achievement must consult with their applied music instructor the semester before enrolling in Music 400.

  3. A recital of at least forty-five minutes of music is required. The repertoire must be comparable to that of a senior recital by a performance major in the B.M. program. Each performance area will determine the memorization requirements.

  4. To qualify, the student must perform for a permission jury at least three weeks prior to the recital date. The student must have the entire recital ready for the faculty permission jury. The faculty permission jury will then select fifteen minutes of the recital program to be performed. The faculty permission jury will consist of the student's applied music instructor, at least one other faculty member in the student's applied music area, and another faculty member selected by the Undergraduate Committee. The faculty vote for permission to play the recital for the performer's recognition award must be unanimous. The same assisting performers must be used in both the permission jury and the public recital.

  5. The student's applied instructor is responsible for the following procedures:
    1. setting the date for the public recital.
    2. notifying the Undergraduate Committee chairman at least six weeks in advance of the recital so that the outside judge may be chosen.
    3. notifying other members in his/her applied area about the recital and having the assurance that at least one other member will be present for the permission jury and the recital. The percussion teacher will select one other faculty member at his discretion.
    4. setting a date for the permission jury in consultation with the jury one month in advance of the public recital.

  6. If the student passes the recital permission jury, he/she will perform the full recital in public, which will be graded by all of the faculty in the student's applied area. The composite grade must be an A or A- in order to be recognized for performance achievement. If a faculty member is not available to hear the recital, he/she will listen to a tape of the recital and submit a grade for it. If the student does not pass the permission jury for the performer's recognition award, he/she may still perform the recital in public at his/her applied teacher's discretion. However, he/she would not receive the performer's recognition award.

  7. The recognition of performance achievement will be noted on the transcript as a separate course: MUSIC 400 Solo Recital. The faculty's composite grade will be the grade in the course.

  8. Students who earn an A or A- in Music 400 will receive a certificate acknowledging the recognition of performance achievement at the School of Music awards ceremony. (Grade point calculations are listed in the University Undergraduate Advising Handbook.)
